Added Value

Added Value is a non-profit organization promoting the sustainable development of Red Hook by nurturing a new generation of young leaders. They work towards this goal by creating opportunities for the youth of South Brooklyn to expand their knowledge base, develop new skills and positively engage with their community through the operation of a socially responsible urban farming enterprise. Added Value is working directly with the 1st graders of BNS.

Brooklyn Arts Exchange

BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange—arts and artists in progress - is a multi-arts non-profit organization in Park Slope, Brooklyn, founded in 1991 (as the Gowanus Arts Exchange). Their mission is to provide a nurturing, year-round performance, rehearsal and educational venue in Brooklyn that encourages artistic risk-taking and stimulates dialogue among diverse constituencies.

Brooklyn Boat Works

Brooklyn Boatworks is offering a free afterschool boatbuilding program at BCS. Boatbuilding fosters problem solving and manual skills through a hands-on educational experience for 13 students. However, we need your help to launch this program. We are hoping to underwrite the cost of providing the program through donations. If you would like to help support this exciting new program please make a donation on the Friends of BNS/BCS Website and selecting Boat Building in the funds section of the donation page.

Camp Speers Eljabar

The 3rd through 5th graders of the Brooklyn New School are some of the 6,000 students ranging in grade level from third through high school who travel to Camp Speers-Eljabar YMCA every year for its three-day Outdoor Education programs. Speers program coordinators work with the teachers of BNS to develop a variety of sessions that either complement our existing curricula or bring to life already-covered classroom lessons through experiential learning.

Educators for Social Responsibility

Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR) helps educators create safe, caring, respectful, and productive learning environments. We also help educators work with young people to develop the social skills, emotional competencies, and qualities of character they need to succeed in school and become contributing members of their communities.

Math in the City

Mathematics in the City (MitC) is nationally recognized research-based project in mathematics education reform. Teachers begin their MitC work with the Summer Institute (Level One*), a two-week long, inquiry workshop on teaching and learning mathematics.

Responsive Classroom

Many Brooklyn New School teachers have attended professional development sessions with Responsive Classroom. Responsive Classroom® is an approach to teaching and learning that fosters safe, challenging, and joyful classrooms and schools, kindergarten through eighth grade. Developed by classroom teachers, it consists of practical strategies for bringing together social and academic learning throughout the school day.
