Weekly Letter 11.27.17

Dear Families:

Now that the turkey is consumed and we are entering the winter months, I want to remind you that Tuesday mornings are dedicated to parents.

Last Tuesday, Ed, Beth, Andrew, Ita, Diane, Jessica and Carrie spoke with parents about technology.  The goal of this workshop was to help parents find the balance between using these marvelous devices and being Luddites.  Teachers shared ways to develop a media literacy plan for your family, while also talking about how technology often  opens up possibilities to our students.

We received an email from parent, Tasha Kosviner, who wrote, “A note to say thank you for being so speedily proactive in considering my query - and so comprehensive in your response! So much work and thought went into the presentations and I've come away with some really practical ideas about how to help kids navigate this brave new world!. Please pass my gratitude on to the rest of the staff too.”  Earlier in the year, Tasha had asked us to discuss ‘this brave new world’ with families and that is how that particular workshop came to be.  If there is something you are wondering about, please let us know.  In the meantime, we may repeat the technology workshop later in this school year as it was, indeed, full of important and practical ideas.

Parents As Learning Partners is just one of the things that we do on Tuesday mornings.  Do also attend the PTA meetings, which take place one Tuesday morning a month.  The PTA is not just  its Executive Body, but rather,  it is all of  you.  Without your involvement, it is hard for the PTA to get things done.

The other Tuesday morning activities are the grade level Parent Breakfasts.  This is when Diane, Amy, and I meet with you to talk about anything and everything that has to do with your child’s peer group and grade level.  We always begin with a word from the teachers, sharing with you what is going on in the classroom as well as any concerns or messages from the teachers. Then we open up the discussion, giving you the chance to ask those questions that are on your mind.  The conversation generally lasts from 8:20 until 9:40, allowing  ample time to talk.  Join us tomorrow when we meet with first grade families.

All for now,
